Le Jazz Hot! and Glee!

I now have a theory.

Chris Colfer, Kurt/Ryan Murphy's doppelganger from "Glee," was probably a Broadway diva in another life.

Perhaps Ethel Merman was reborn into this life as a gay man. Or he's where Julie Andrew's lost voice went.

Either way, listen to his vocal run at the end of this song. It's from next Tuesday's episode of "Glee" and the song is called "Le Jazz Hot" from Henri Mancini's "Victor/Victoria" (that lovely little musical about a woman pretending to be a man pretending to be a woman. It may sound like your typical night on Broadway - or San Francisco's Rainbow District - but for the 80's, this musical was revolutionary).

Now imagine him singing it dressed like this:

Scary how well it fits.

True, his version doesn't have the lush tones of Julie Andrew's original but the possibilities are there. A little better vocal control, a fuller sound (which may just arrive as he ages) and he can have those Broadway divas running for their money. He proved that he can kill it and turn it's ashes into sparkles and glitter (remember "Rose's Turn?"). Here's looking forward to how "Glee" stages "Le Jazz Hot" on Tuesday (here's hoping that the "Other Asian" Mike Chang gets to be one of those handsome jazz dancing backup boys).

And to close, here's the Julie herself.

ETA: Wait! I found an image from "Glee's" staging of "Le Jazz Hot." It's significantly less shiny than I would have liked but I am loving the dual-colored suit, it's very Harvey Dent-like. Except without the burnt face. And with more Broadway. Though if this image is any indication, Colfer could be very comfortable on a live stage.
